Our generative and interactive work focuses on data sonification, algorithmic development, and sharing the creative process with the audience. Utilizing a wide variety of tools, we turn data into music, algorithms into audio controls, and the audience into a collaborative partner in the creative process. These works are designed to be installed and played continuously in a variety of spaces and locations or live-streamed online.

Get Back to Your [Life]
Get Back to Your [Life] helped identify the challenges of maneuvering throughout Middle Tennessee while prompting a collective imagination of a better future. This work was originally produced in association with the Greater Nashville Regional Council as part of the South Corridor Study.

Get Back To Your [Life] was created in support of the South Corridor Study conducted by the Greater Nashville Regional Council. It offered people the opportunity to share their thoughts and experience with area transit planners through an interactive art project. Answers from a short online survey were incorporated into the work in real time. Shared via live-stream and public events, the project helped middle Tennesseans shape a better future for area transit.
The study worked to identify a series of short-, mid-, and long-term recommendations to implement the vision for rapid transit between Nashville, Berry Hill, Oak Hill, Brentwood, Franklin, Thompson‘s Station, Spring Hill, and Columbia Tennessee, as well as other neighborhoods, communities, employment centers, and destinations along the South Corridor. Get Back to Your [Life] was presented in both English and Spanish, and shared via live-stream and public outreach events. People could participate in the project online or at the community events.
How it Worked
Once the user submitted their answers to the survey the information was incorporated into the piece within a few minutes: musical notes and visuals changed based on user travels within the corridor, and their lifestyle choices were spoken aloud in a collective imagining of what a better future could look like.
The visual elements of the work outline the major traffic patterns of the South Corridor. From Nashville, at the top, I-65 and State Route 31 extend southward down to Columbia outlined by the moving white points of light. The effervescent pillars that appear and disappear are situated based on proposed locations of future transit hubs. The colored lines that move up and down the corridor represent the travels of users as indicated by the zip-codes and travel destinations collected in the survey. Musical notes are based on the length of travel between the various origins and destinations.

A generative work based on live GPS data from local transit departments. As the buses drive around the city, GPS data is updated, and the locations determine the pitches and visual patterns of the installation. The transit system turns the city into a musical instrument.

The Migratory Patterns of People lets public transit systems play their home city like an instrument. Live GPS data from the city's bus system is imported and translated into the sonic and visual patterns of the piece. Each dot and circle on the screen represents the location of a bus on its route in the city. They also represent the notes that are playing, and as they move left or right, up or down, the notes also rise and fall, giving shape to the harmonies of the work. Two bus lines play at a time, and the route numbers currently playing are spoken aloud in multiple languages to celebrate the diversity of public transit ridership.
The work was designed to be either installed in a physical location, streamed online, or both, in an effort to connect people to the public transit system of the city. It is customizable to cities who use live GPS tracking for their bus system, or any other system with General Transit Feed Specification (GTSF) data.
The Migratory Patterns of People was commissioned by Nashville, Tennessee's WeGo Public Transit. The premiere of the piece took place in early 2019 and was live-streamed online for two months. The stream was embedded on WeGo's website, twitter and facebook feeds.

Wade [Music for River and People]
An interactive work using live river flow data from waterdata.usgs.gov and motion sensor data from the installation site. Fundamental pitches fluctuate as the river flow changes, and audio effects are layered on top of the drone as people move throughout the space.

Wade [Music for River and People] is an invitation for people to step into and create a musical experience with our rivers. It is an interactive music installation composed in real time by the flowing river and the movement of people. Real time data about the river’s depth and flow is pulled from the United States Geological Survey website and transformed into changing pitches and dynamics of the piece. As the river subtly changes over time the notes and volumes of the work also change, reflecting the movement of the river. New musical elements are added, and existing ones are modulated as people move throughout the installation space. The audience is immersed in, and changes, the sonic flow of the river around them. Wade was designed to be installed on Pedestrian Bridges or river walks or water-side parks. The source of the data is customizable to nearly any waterway monitored by the USGS.
The first installation of Wade was April 5 – May 23, 2018 on the The John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge in downtown Nashville, TN. For the installation in Nashville, data reflected the Cumberland River, the Harpeth River, and Richland Creek. The Nashville installation was presented in partnership with the Nashville Waterways Consortium‘s Rivive! Nashville movement and funded in part by Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission. It was voted a Best in Nashville 2018 event from the Nashville Scene.
On August 2, 2019, Wade began playing the music of Ohio’s Kokosing, Walhonding and Muskingum Rivers. The installation ran through September 8, 2019 on the downtown pedestrian bridge in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Wade [Mount Vernon] was produced with special assistance from the Foundation Park Conservancy and with the generous support of city residents.
